USCGC MACKINAW 60th Anniversary

The "Mighty Mac"

Welcome to your father's recent trip to Cheboygan, Michigan to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the USCGC MACKINAW. Art, or as his crewmates called him, "Tony" spent 1950 to 1952 stationed in Cheboygan working on the largest domestic icebreaker, the MACKINAW.

Commissioned in 1944, the MACKINAW was the most powerful and capable icebreaker in the world. MACKINAW's design incorporated many innovative designs which allowed her to break up to 3 feet of ice continuously and a maximum of 5 feet by backing and ramming.

For 60 years, the MACKINAW has continued to serve the Great Lakes shipping industry, so vital to the region and the nation. The MACKINAW will be decommisioned in early 2006 to make way for a new, but smaller, MACKINAW.
